SSIP (Safety Schemes in Procurement) is the umbrella body for leading health and safety pre-qualification schemes in the UK, including CHAS, SafeContractor, SMAS Worksafe, and Constructionline. All are assessed against the same SSIP Core Criteria.
Through "Deemed to Satisfy" mutual recognition, accreditation with one SSIP member scheme satisfies the requirements of the others — so you don't need to apply to multiple schemes separately. For Kent contractors, SSIP accreditation is often required before you can tender for work or join a principal contractor's approved supplier list.
SSIP stands for Safety Schemes in Procurement. It's an umbrella body that brings together the UK's leading health and safety pre-qualification schemes — including CHAS, SafeContractor, and SMAS — all assessed against a common set of Core Criteria. Achieving accreditation with one SSIP member scheme demonstrates to buyers that your health and safety arrangements meet the required standard.
Deemed to Satisfy is the mutual recognition agreement between SSIP member schemes. If you're already accredited with one SSIP scheme, the core health and safety elements are accepted by all other SSIP members — meaning you don't need to repeat the full assessment for each scheme. ISOHS can advise on the best scheme for your situation.
Typically you'll need a health and safety policy, risk assessments and method statements (RAMS), evidence of employer's liability insurance, training records, and details of your health and safety management arrangements. ISOHS reviews all your documentation before submission to make sure it meets the SSIP Core Criteria and reduces the risk of rejection.
With properly prepared documentation, most SSIP applications are processed within a few weeks of submission. The time is mainly spent getting your H&S documentation into shape before we submit. ISOHS fast-tracks this by reviewing everything upfront so there are no queries or resubmissions.
Not necessarily — ISO 45001 certification can support an SSIP application and may satisfy some elements, but SSIP accreditation and ISO 45001 certification are separate processes with different scopes. Contact us and we'll advise on the most efficient route to getting you on approved contractor lists.
